Add Google Analytics Tracking To Your Email Marketing Campaigns

Track conversions from email campaigns to purchase

If you use Google Analytics on your website, you can actually track clicks from your MailChimp email marketing campaigns all the way to purchases on your website (free). Google Analytics can generate reports that show you how well your email marketing drives sales!

You can measure:

  • Visits from email campaign to website
  • Number of transactions resulted from email campaign
  • Total revenue from email campaign
  • Average value of each visit from email campaign
  • Per-visitor value from email campaign
  • Ecommerce conversion rate from email campaign

How To Integrate MailChimp With Google Analytics

There are two parts to integrating your email marketing with Google Analytics.

1. Put Google Analytics on your website, and turn on conversion tracking.
First, make sure you have your Google Analytics account setup on your website, and that it's setup to track conversions. It basically involves placing special code snippets throughout your website, and then on your order confirmation pages (if you haven't done this yet, here's more information about Google Conversion Tracking). It's really cool if you or your techies can get "goal values" in place, so that you can see exactly how much each conversion was worth.

2. Check a box in MailChimp
After you've got conversion tracking setup in your Google Analytics account, create your campaign in MailChimp. When you're creating your campaign, look for the Google Analytics checkbox. Check it. Done: How to track email marketing campaigns with Google Analytics

That's it. Just check the box and we'll automatically add the campaign title, date of creation, and medium (all the variables that Google Analytics needs) into every link in your email campaign. If you want, you can manually change the "title" tag. Otherwise, we'll just pull the information from your campaign.

After you send your email campaign, check your Google Analytics stats:

  1. Log in to Google Analytics.
  2. Click on "Traffic Sources"
  3. Select "All Traffic Sources"
  4. Using the "Show:" pulldown sort by "medium"
  5. Click on the utm_medium=email or utm_source={List Name}
  6. You'll see all your different MailChimp campaigns.
  7. From here, you can click the "Goals" tab to see how many people came to your website from your email campaign, and completed any goals you've setup.
