What’s Coming in MailChimp v4.3.3

October 20th, 2009 | by Ben

This weekend we’re launching MailChimp v4.3.3, and it’s packed with some really cool new features…

  • 50 new built-in templates, plus a revamped template gallery to accommodate all of MailChimp’s template options
  • YouTube merge tag – generates a video player thumbnail then links to your video
  • Segment by engagement – Create campaigns and target your most engaged subscribers
  • Segment by purchase activity – Send targeted campaigns to people who’ve bought stuff from you
  • RSS-to-email scheduling – Select time of day, day of week for RSS-to-email campaigns.
  • RSS-to-email subscriber count shows in feedburner stats
  • Auto-translation on signup forms – Signup forms will auto-detect and auto-translate to the language of user

We’ll also be doing some major server upgrade work, so it means we may have a few hours of downtime this weekend…

Scheduled Server Maintenance

We’ll be starting the upgrade process October 24th (Saturday evening) around 11:30PM ET, and it will carry over into Sunday morning. We strongly recommend you schedule your campaigns around the upgrade window.

More details and screenshots of all the new features to come! We’ll also be sending an email out to all our users to notify you of the scheduled server maintenance.

Will the Youtube merge tag work with other sites, such as Vimeo?

    • Andy Gambles says:

      The RSS-to-Email scheduling sounds interesting.

For the Youtube merge tag have you worked on anything funky to get around RSS-to-Email imports which include a YouTube video?

    • Pedro says:

would be great if we could insert “whatever” video-links, because i am just creating a video page with screencasts and videos for my clients.

There you can use the url or also the code to embed it onto other pages.
Shouldn´t be a big deal for mailchimp. You guys are anyway multimedia.

The awesome part would be to be able to see a pic of the video in the newsletter or even to be able to change the preview pic to a jpg.
This as an idea for you!!!!

    • Pedro says:

      “one more thing….”

I try to get a chance to manage my clients with seperate logins to be able to manage their accounts.
They should be able to login to their account and me as an admin shall be able to setup their rights.

Most of my clients are totally unexperianced by using such tools and I guess this would be a big deal for mailchimp to create reseller accounts.

I still not use mailchimp for my clients (and I would like too!!!!), because of this missing features. I also would like to manage each account with prizes for each client.

your features are really great and much better as on Constant contact – please listen to us resellers! (I got about 92 clients!)

    • Gary says:

When are you launching mobile marketing?

    • joe says:

      Looking forward to this! x

    • brian says:

any shot of a rehaul on the autoresponder features? Everything you guys do is great, but the autoresponders are severely lacking (hack-ish approach to immediate confirmation, date segmentation is messy, etc.)

    • Tony Cecala says:

Thanks for the “RSS-to-email scheduling – Select time of day, day of week for RSS-to-email campaigns.”

Just two weeks ago, I was told this was “Impossible”.

      You guys rock!

    • Rusty Zipper says:

Will redirect URLs still function during this downtime (for example, if we sent out an email on Friday & someone clicked through on a URL during the downtime, would it still resolve?

      Thanks!

      • Kevin says:

Second the question — will images resolve, will URLs redirect, etc.

      • Dan K says:

Hi Rusty, the maintenance window will require all systems be down. This includes link redirects. You’ll want to make sure you send your content with enough time for initial interest to taper. If you’re not sure how much time to allow, check your “Opens & Clicks Over Time” stats under your past campaign stats area for insight. Those stats should give you a ball park to work from to avoid issues.

        • philldo says:

I understand that all systems will be down. What sort of maintenance message will clients see? While I love your monkey logo, I hope you have a more generic and discreet error message. Kinda like how you use forward-to-friend.com unlike them other guys blatantly pushing their company name in all urls.

I’ll post on the wish list for eppurls to be on a different server so they still work during main server upgrades. Wouldn’t like a email to go viral and loose the link.

Thanks for the great upgrades! Appreciate Mailchimp’s constant drive to improve and add features.

    • Michael Margolis says:

Thanks for the awesome upgrades. Excited to see the 50 new templates!

Please consider updating next the ability to segment lists more easily (while keeping the field invisible). Currently, I have to do that thru the forms section, as you recommend, but we all know that’s just a workaround, and makes it cumbersome to work with segmented lists.

Maybe your current update address this too.

      Thanks,

      Michael

    • Jonathan says:

For the engagement part, would be great if we click to see the list of subscribers, and have a column that tells us how many e-mails they have opened, and perhaps which e-mails were opened or the last date they opened one.

That way if we see someone has never opened an e-mail, we can delete them. Or if they haven’t opened opened an e-mail in 6 months, perhaps they don’t care anymore, and we can delete them.

      Thanks!

    • Mike Templeton says:

I’m very excited for the RSS-to-email scheduling capabilities. I just set up a new campaign this week and noticed it will be sending out at 3AM CST by default. It will be nice to have more control over when that is hitting our subscribers’ inboxes.

The segmentation by engagement also sounds pretty interesting. I could see that working well to target those who are most engaged and make them offers that less-engaged subscribers aren’t privy too.

    • Mate says:

It would be great to see the full screen editing mode return. I know it was a little buggy before, but on a 24″ monitor only utilizing 4 inches of working space in either code or design view is quite annoying.

      • Andy Gambles says:

You know I thought I had imagined that feature when it disappeared from the editor!

Yes can we have this back please.

        • Ben says:

Fullscreen editing mode is a great feature from the FCK editor we’re using, but it was buggy for certain mac/browser combos. Very buggy in a bad way. So we had to take it down. Working on overhauling our editor anyway.

          • Kevin says:

Fighting with the mailchimp editor is the thing i dread most about a new campaign. Actually, it’s the only thing i dread — the rest is fun.

If I’m truthful with myself, I only send 1/3 the campaigns I should because I dread it so.

          • Justin Deaville says:

            Hi Ben
I enjoy working with most aspects of MailChimp. But, as a Mac user I find your editor irritating – I keep losing saved work. Which browser would you recommend, you say some are better than others?
            Justin

    • Eric Thomas says:

I see a number of asks in the comments to this post as well as other posts here on your blog. I’d appreciate the opportunity to voice my vote for feature enhancements and I’m certain other users would as well.

Does MailChimp have an official user request forum? If not, please consider setting one up using the popular uservoice.com or similar alternative.

    • Bernardo says:

Good luck on the upgrade! I love Mail Chimp

    • candicegetsdown says:

      Hey, Mail Chimp Guys,

I’m still in the testing phases of RSS to email and I was wondering if your new templates will allow two separate rss feeds run in two separate sections on the template rather than the one rss feed run in several places on the same email.

Is there currently a workaround to run two separate RSS feeds on one email or is it just not possible. If it has not been created yet, the added benefit of having a single email run two separate RSS feeds is so that you can break up your email layout (like a magazine) into two separate categories like Upcoming Events and Features, News & Reviews, or Photos & Blogs. See my wordpress blog front page for an example if made into a cool email: http://www.iDANZToday.com.

I think this would be a great idea. If you guys can figure this out, you would be ABSOLUTELY the BEST!

      Candice

      • Kris says:

Yes please make it possible to have several feeds. Mashing doesn’t help because there isn’t an unmash. I would love to be able to route unique feeds to different sections as Candice described. Thanks!

      • Matt says:

I too would love this :-)

        Especially for upcoming events

    • Justin says:

Being able to embed video in an email campaign (or at least give the appearance to) will be huge for new campaigns that we are working on. Can’t wait to see more details!

    • Kevin Adair says:

Was their anything being done to the system last night? It was acting up on our end.

    • Romany Thresher says:

I think there needs to be a 0 delay option. All other autoresponders have a 0 delay. It really throughs things out of whack when people expect to get info immediately. I know I would be annoyed if I subscribed to an ebook or something and had to wait a day to start or get it. That is more important than all the flashy bits

      • Barrie Simpson says:

Couldn’t agree more; when is an auto-responder not an auto-responder; when it’s supplied by Mailchimp!

        • Ben says:

Ha. We built our autoresponders tool as a simple way to send a sequence of emails to subscribers. Like a “weekly tips” or “12 days till Christmas” kind of ongoing/automated campaign. Looking around, we noticed people seemed to be calling this “autoresponders.” We thought that was a silly name, because we remember autoresponders meaning something else. But we just went with the flow. Ever since, we learned that “autoresponders” sometimes means something altogether different from what we intended. So we’re very, very, very seriously considering renaming it altogether.

    • Jeremiah says:

      Awesome. You guys rock.

    • philldo says:

on second thought my eepurls go back to my campaign. If the campaign was down why would i need the link to work?

    • dw says:

Finally! Schedule-able RSS campaigns! Thanks very much. I feel heard!

    • Tim Aynes says:

Looking forward to the upcoming changes. Thanks for being responsive to our needs and desires (okay, mostly our desires!)

    • Ronen Bekerman says:

How do i join the feedburner counter with mailchimp?

      • Ben says:

Hi Ronen, I actually have no idea yet. :-) It’s a new feature in v4.3.3, which is still launching today, and will be live tomorrow in all accounts. We’ll have instructions live then.

    • John Goodwin says:

When will all our templates be back? I just logged in (thinking the upgrade would be completed) and our templates are all gone and previous campaigns do not display properly (they use the current appearance instead of the template in place when they were sent).
Have we lost all our work on these templates?
Have we lost the images in our gallery?
I certainly hope not. Let me know if you have any questions. I will await your answer.
      -John

      • Ben says:

John, we noticed some file corruption taking place with styles and templates during our weekend upgrade. We’ve got that under control now, so things should be safe to create new templates. Sorry for any inconvenience. If you’ve actually lost any templates, contact our support team (help -at- mailchimp). We have backups going back several days, so they can hopefully be restored.

    • Jacob says:

      Hi fellow chimps,
Where should suggestions for the next upgrade go?
I’m burning to get a sms-service. Texting us when a customer opens a mail.
Imagine a customer opening a offer after a couple of days and you by some how calls them in that moment to follow up on it. What a coincidence!
