One of our partners has developed the technology for embedding video in email and we've been distributing their emails since early 2008, we've seen excellent creative from the likes of BMW and British Airlines.

There was a noticeable uplift in click through rates and the campaigns have all been highly successful.

However, Chris was correct and we've found the technology only useful in highly targeted campaigns (and of course to web clients only) but it works. I would imagine that in conjunction with CertifiedMail, this will work very well.

Hi Ben - to answer the question:

Video embedded in CertifiedVideo messages will play directly within the email browsers of our ISP partners (initially webmail only and AOL's proprietary mail client in the near future). At non-partner ISPs, the same messages will render with a clickable graphic of the video that pops out to a different window (new web page or media player) - this will ensure that the email won't appear "broken" etc.

We'll be announcing more details in the weeks ahead, but always happy to answer any questions you or your readers may have about CertifiedEmail or upcoming products from Goodmail like CertifiedVideo.

This is awesome news! The potential that will bring is incredible. I just wonder what will happen for email clients such as outlook, thunderbird, Mail for mac, and the notorious Lotus notes.

If they get the kinks worked out this could bring email marketing back to being an incredibly viable way to reach out and engage your target audience.

I really feel that on demand content will become the new wave of marketing online where people opt in to shows, information, websites and so forth.

I think this is was RSS was attempting to do, but just hasn't caught on. The more that people are going online the more the technology world is realizing how ass backwards email has become. If anything it should be a richer means of communication and online experience just as much as a web browser.

The problem is that for so many companies they don't see email as a rich user experience and so it hasn't been treated as one. They keep trying to boil it down to a basic means of communication not realizing that it could really open up a huge revenue opportunity.

@Chris - Wow. I gotta admit, I hadn't quite thunk that deep about this. I was a little more enthralled by the possibilities. Very, very good points you raise.

Especially the "explaining to your clients" issue in #2.

Wonder if you can use the NOSCRIPT tag or something.

Perhaps Goodmail will shed more light on this product as they get closer to launch. Or, if Goodmail has a google alert for the keyword "goodmail" so that they can see when people talk about "goodmail," perhaps that will convince someone from goodmail to come and explain. Ahem. Goodmail.

So… looks like this is only going to work with webmail, not desktop clients. I'd like to know 2 things:

1) How will this gracefully degrade for email clients that aren't partner ISPs?

2) A rock-solid list of talking points for clients who won't understand why it works on their Comcast webmail but not in their Outlook at work.

To paraphrase Diggers, demo or it didn't happen.
