The New MailChimp

April 11, 2008 – 9:37 am

Last September, we began work on an all new MailChimp (this would be “v3″ if you’re keeping track). We codenamed it “tarzan” because the little chimp is slightly more “civilized” now. Every single line of code has been optimized, and new technology has been put in place to make MailChimp’s infrastructure more powerful, scalable, stable, and secure.

While we were at it, we completely redesigned the interface to make it faster and easier to use. For example, we created an all new HTML email designer, where you can design your campaigns and edit content all on one simple screen. We added graphs and pie charts to our reports, made searching your lists super fast and easy, and advanced coders get a nifty advanced code editor embedded right into the MailChimp interface. Here’s an almost-full list of features.

We’ll be posting more about the new MailChimp as we get closer to launch.

Right now, we’re undergoing final QA. The new MailChimp will launch in early May, and will be automatic and totally free for all our customers. To learn more, we’ve got a features list and demo videos at this temporary micro-site:

Here’s a sneak peek at one of those demo videos:

  4. Sweet presentation video! I love the screen capture and the way that it’s skewed on an angle…is this a MAC thing/feature? =)

I can’t wait to see the launch of Tarzan!

    Great work!

  5. PLEASE tell us how you did that screencast! I’m trying to figure out how to record my live video feed as well as sharing my screen, exactly as you did. (I already know about Mousepose … the spotlight thing.)

P.S. Oh yeah, the new Mailchimp features look great, too. ;-)

  6. Wow, so many posts about the screencast and none about the new features, I guess the new update must be good!! :)

Will I be able to quickly delete people from my list in the new update?

It was a nice screen cast I have to say.

  7. @Brockdin:

How did you want to delete people from your list? I think I know what you mean, but I’ve learned not to assume anything anymore (because I’m always wrong).

  8. I’m seriously looking forward to this MailChimp update! :-)

The screengrabbing has been done with ScreenFlow (Mac-only) and is hosted on blip.tv which offers considerately better quality than the omnipresent YouTube!

  9. Thanks, Don! I was actually putting together a more lengthy “how-to” for our video demos. They’re getting more attention from our web designer audience than the actual MailChimp upgrade. Ha!

Screenflow lets me do what I’ve always wanted since starting MailChimp in 2001—produce “TV quality” movie demos (with cuts, transitions, zooms, pans, callouts, etc). Basically, fast-paced, constantly-moving videos of otherwise very boring screenshots of a web app.

In addition to Screenflow, I did some trickery with Spaces (multiple desktops) and iMovie (for editing and transitions) to make our teaser video (the one with music).

I’ll post some tips shortly. Working out the content right now.

  10. The features look great!
The graphs are really appreciated (not only those - of course)!

  11. I signed up a couple days ago and I was impressed with just your average old monkey….looking forward to my rendezvous with Tarzan himself.

PS…am I the only girl here?

By sarah on Apr 18, 2008

  12. Sarah - no you’re not! :)

Also very much looking forward to Tarzan, especially the graphical reports and the snazzy new dash.

  13. Yes, the screencast is nice, but what I’m really excited about are these more robust ways of dealing with lists and contacts. That’s the single biggest weakness of the current Chimp and I’m thrilled to see you addressing it. Way to be on the ball!

  14. Hi there,

I may have missed something but when will the new version be up and running?

    Cheers

  15. Sam, maybe you missed our alert:

We’re shooting for mid-May (up and running on the 19th). Migration of 7 years of customer data is the big challenge right now.

  16. The new features looks great. Looking forward to it.

I was wondering. Have you added support for unicode character sets? We use Greek all the time and most aspects of the products do not support it. That would be really appreciated!

I hope the migration goes well!

    Cheers!

By Dimitris Rakopoulos on May 16, 2008

  17. Hi Dimitris,

Yes, v3 will support Unicode character sets. Your campaigns will support it better, and you can use Unicode on the signup process (signup forms, thank you pages, and anywhere you have the ability to enter your own content).

Internationalizing MailChimp is a work in progress, and it’s going to take time to get it 100% there (and to do it right). But we’re working on it!
