I like their email format and I think it works great for it's purpose. I think you said it all "If you focus on what your customers want (and how they use your product), HTML emails can make your transactional messages much more useful (and used)." Too many companies try to do too much within transactional emails. Don't over-complicate things and you'll find better results. Definitely nicer than the old version. But I wish they had used my suggestion to include the user's "bio" text in the email notifications. The bio can make-or-break whether I follow somebody or not. However, I can see how including it in the email could be problematic. It's user-supplied text, and could be used as a "sideband" method of spamming all sorts of objectionable content, I suppose.
