MailChimp Wordpress Plugin

May 21st, 2008 | by Ben

wordpress_logo.pngOur API Team has been busy lately.

Right after posting new functionality to our API (the ability to pass content from your CMS to MailChimp for delivery), they went and created a nifty MailChimp Wordpress plugin.

So if you’ve got a Wordpress blog or website, and you’d like visitors to subscribe to your email newsletter (not everybody likes RSS), this is a convenient way to stick your MailChimp signup box right into your side column (we’re using it on this blog).

Installation is a snap. Once you’ve got it dropped into your Wordpress directory and activated, you can configure everything from Wordpress, right in your browser (what form fields to display, text, interest groups, and even the design). No coding necessary!

Any news as to when this will be updated to work with WP 2.7?

Thanks for the continued innovation -

      Bob

    • Jesse says:

Bob – I just pulled out WP 2.7, installed the plugin, and subscribed my email using it without any issue.

If you’d like to contact me via email with some details about the issue you are running into, I’ll be happy to help. api _at_ mailchimp -dot- com

I have set this up in Wordpress (very cool by the way), but I have one question, my interest category in my list is a radio buttons. But in the Wordpress plugin, it is displayed as the radio click on one line, and the text on the next… It seems like it should be on the same line, but for some reason it is on two. Is there a way to fix this? You can see it on my family blog at http://www.luvfam.com.

      Thanks

    • Michael says:

Awesome plugin! I have it up and running just fine. I have one requested tweak to make, I would like to add and additional comment under the subscribe button/Update ME! button on my site (www.rmlmetals.com) to test different reasurance clauses of not soliciting their email addresses. I have a decent programming/HTML background and mess around just fine with the php coding. I am sure the source file to mess with is the “mailchimp_includes.php” file, and the part I think I need to add the text is just after line 150 after the “mc_signup_submit” or am I mistaken? I am just hoping for a little help with coding to add to display the text after/under the submit button. Any help much appreciated.

    • Jesse says:

@Brad – we finally fixed up the interest group display issues in a release pushed out today.

@Michael – yes, thats where you would add that. Just keep in mind that if you auto-upgrade to a newer version of the plugin, that change will get wiped out.

      • Michaell says:

Thank you Jesse, I appreciate you taking the time to get back to me. I am trying to fresh’en up my PHP by reading some more, I just updated your plugin and will experiment with different text inserts at the end. It would be cool, if yall could add that functionality to the WYSIWYG editor plugin for wordpress or on your site to add it in that way instead of manually. Just a little suggestion. :-)

How do I get an IMAGE into the sign-up box within the WordPress plug-in. BE VERY specific – teehee. Like baby steps, puhleez….

      THANKS!

    • KathyDV says:

THANK YOU…I figured it out in the wee hours. I am very pleased. Now, if I could figure out how to get an image to float behind the part where the name and email address goes, i would dislocate my shoulder patting myself on the back….

      THANKS AGAIN!!!

        Kathy,

        Struggling for last 6-7 hours.

How did you manage to add an image to the mailchimp signup box?

Seems like the harder than climbing mount everest! Any help is appreciated.

        here is my code line

        div.mc_signup_form { echo “background-image: “http://sanjosegreenhome.com/wp-content/themes/grassland/images/rss.png;”};

    • Bill says:

      totally awesome!

    • Michael says:

Kathy, I love that idea and pic. I just might have to borrow that idea and use it on my site. :-) Cute puppy pic.

Has anyone gotten the MailChimp WordPress plug-in to work under Windows (IIS7, PHP5) enironment?

When I try to activate the mailchimp plug-in my WordPress stops with an Internal Server Error…

Most of the other plug-ins works fine in my system (IIS7 running PHP) but maybe not MailChimp?

      Any suggestions?

    • Kate says:

I haven’t installed it yet, but I’m curious as to whether an “unsubscribe” button is offered as well in the plugin. Any insights?

    • LaDonna says:

Is the WP plug-in still available? All the links I click lead me to no where. Help…

    • Sue says:

I’ve installed the Wordpress plugin in a text widget. I’ve turned off the custom styling in the settings of MailChimp Setup. I’ve saved the changes and cleared my temp files yet I still have a border around the contents of the form. How do I do away with the border? This is in Firefox 3. Even worse in IE 8 the text widget with the form doesn’t show at all. It should be the top widget of the right sidebar.

Also when a selection is made in the interests groups an error is returned saying “» “on” is not a valid Interest Group for the list: ahhmoments Newsletter”

Can you please tell me how I can fix these issues?

      • Jesse says:

Sue – to get the border turned off, turn the Custom Styling back on and set both the “header” and “form” border settings to “0″.

The interest groups problem looks to be because you have the “show” checkbox turned on, but there are no actual interest groups for that list. Just switch that off and you should be fine. That’s just an edge case bug we’ll need to fix.

    • Brad Compton says:

Great plugin. Is there a way I can adjust the width of the plugin. I updated my Wordpress to the latest version today and that is when the problem occurred. I have taken the widget off my sidebar and then put it back in hoping that would help. Any suggestions? Do I need to download a newer version of the plugin?

      Thx

      Brad

      Hi.

I am new customizing a widget/theme but am learning a little at a time.

I would like to ask how hard it would be to add an image and edit the font of the current Mail Chimp widget I am using so it matches the look of the other widgets in my sidebar.

      Thank you for your help.

      Leslie

      • Jesse says:

        Leslie -
If you turn off the custom styling, you can target the #mc_signup_form css id in a style sheet to customize things. Then you can either add you image header that way or you should be able to put an img tag in the Header field

      I Give Up

      - I simply want to add a FREE eBook offer to this sidebar widget. it will enhance sign up rate i know. But i can’t do it.

I am not good at php html, the present form on my site looks a mess on IE.

      Help me

can i add e book offer with this sidebar widget

      • Jesse says:

You’ll likely be tracking the Ebook offering with either an Interest Group or a merge field – if so, just add those fields in the config settings for the plugin. One note – the WP plugin doesn’t currently handle the field types other than text fields, so if you are using, say, a radio button field for that, you’ll probably want to get the Embed Code form for your list and paste it into your WP sidebar template.

    • SmilingCat says:

      Hi,
installed the Plugin on WP 2.8.4
As soon as I click activate, WP freezes.
I can only get WP to run again if I delete the Mailchimp Plugin Directory.
I am hosting my own WP Installation on a 1&1 Server. Any ideas how to fix this?
      thx
      boris

      • Jesse says:

Sounds like our plugin is conflicting with another one you have installed. If you can check your web server error logs, there should be some sort of error message there that may help us prevent this.

Conversely, a list of plugins activated for your site may help, though that will likely take us longer to test.

        • SmilingCat says:

          Jesse,
thank you for the helpful hint. I went through my plug-ins and turned them off one by one.

Looks like the Askimet Comment Spam Checker caused the problem.
Also I had to turn off fance JS to make it work without crashing.

Have you heard of problems with Askimet before?

          thanks again for your help!

          • Jesse says:

Actually I heard about an Akismet conflict yesterday for the first time. The version released yesterday seemed to clear that up, though I’m still not 100% sure why it just started. If you install that, you should be able to turn both plugins back on plus the javascript option in ours.

Can we have a POP UP op-in Sign up form in form of a WordPress plugin.

    • Todd says:

Im wodering how you customize the length and colour of the text input boxes on the sign up form, and how you customize the submit button, instead of the default one. thanks

      • Ben says:

@Todd – If you’re using the code we provide, the customization is limited. There’s an option on all our signup forms to “switch to advanced” mode. That allows you to do anything you want, so long as you know HTML.

        • Todd says:

great ta for the quick reply, i have fundamental knowledge so cool ill get in and give it a go.

Is there .css files included in the plug in folder?

          • Jesse says:

Todd – there’s no CSS file in there – we generate a style tag when you use the styling options available via the plugin settings. Take a look at the HTML for it and you’ll find the elements are easily targetable with your own css, though.

        • Rohit says:

          Ben,

I am struggling for last 6-7 hours with just one line of code in the mailchimp.php file

How do you add an image to the mailchimp signup box?

          here is my code line

          div.mc_signup_form { echo “background-image: “http://sanjosegreenhome.com/wp-content/themes/grassland/images/rss.png;”};

          • Jesse says:

If you’re going to edit the plugin code, you are pretty much on your own. However, you should be able to easily add the normal CSS version of that tag to your site’s style sheet and be set.

    • Authentika says:

I have installed the plugin in 2.8.4 and everything works fine except when I try to customize text using Japanese :

      - Submit Button text : everything on front is garble (like ãã£ã³ã), but the Japanese in MC plugin admin page is still showing properly…
      - Header content, FO displays Japanese just fine, but the Japanese in MC plugin admin page is garble like :

I have tried to modify error messages in php files, I have the same problem on FO, cannot display properly.

      Anyone can help ?
