A/B Testing Email Ads

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

I’m pruning some bookmarks from my browser this morning, and came across this article on Clickz:

Tips for Selling Ads in E-mail by Jeanne Jennings.

Very useful stuff, if your master plan is to become the next FlavorPill, Thrillist or DailyCandy (purchased for $125M).

One of Jeanne’s tips is to allow your advertisers to run A/B tests within your campaigns. You probably know we’ve got an automated A/B testing tool, but did you know that if you use it in conjunction with our dynamic content merge tags, you can actually A/B test your content and creative (even your entire email design, if you wish)?

Can an ESP really help your deliverability?

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

inbox-graph-thmContrary to popular belief, switching to an ESP (email service provider) like MailChimp, ConstantContact, etc., is not a silver bullet for deliverability.

Spam filters and email gateways look at two kinds of things: 1) your email message, and 2) your email infrastructure. In terms of your email message, ESPs can’t help it if you send spammy content, manage your lists like an idiot, or if a link in your email has a bad domain reputation. But as ReturnPath points out here, ESPs do have one important advantage: our infrastructure.

So if you’re managing your own email servers and delivery issues with ISPs, firewalls, throttling, feedback loops, and bouncebacks are becoming a supreme headache, you might be thinking about moving to an ESP.

This article is about how one email sender, Photojojo, decided to switch from their in-house solution to MailChimp. We’ll show you how we helped them make the transition, what we experienced, and how it impacted their deliverability.

Using Twitter For Promos Without Being a D-bag, Part II

People Love Free Stuff

It’s hard for me to believe that we ever thought it would be difficult to give away 1,000 tshirts. On September 10th when we launched the promotion, all 100 shirts we made available were claimed within two and a half minutes. That’s one tshirt every 1.5 seconds. I was well aware that people love MailChimp, but it was amazing to witness in that way.

Using Twitter For Promos Without Being a D-bag

Friday, December 11th, 2009

eep_from_denmarkIn celebration of of our Forever Free Plan, we wanted to launch a promotional t-shirt giveaway. Free email marketing, free t-shirts.. makes sense right? In the marketing world they call it synergy, but it just seemed like a great way to help spread the word about MailChimp while celebrating our users at the same time.

Our goal wasn’t necessarily to amass more Twitter followers or Facebook fans just for the sake of increasing our follower count. After all, with both Twitter and Facebook the number of fans or followers you have isn’t significant in any real way. Sure, the more fans you have the larger the group of people who will see your message, but that doesn’t necessarily dictate their level of interaction/engagement with your brand or business.

Twitter-to-email Tutorial

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

One thing we do with our @mailchimp twitter account is we tag our favorite tweets from customers. For example, if someone tweets something like this:

You "fav a tweet" by clicking the little star in the corner

You "fav a tweet" by clicking the little star in the corner

we click the little “favorite” star, and it gets saved in our list of favorites. It’s basically like bookmarking a web page, but for tweets. We then dynamically pull those favs into our MailChimp website (such as on our testimonials page). On the side, we’ll occasionally send those nice tweets around the office by email.

Then Amanda, our Chief Twitter Officer, realized something cool: all our favorites are available via RSS feed, so we can actually use MailChimp’s RSS-to-email tool to automatically send twittermonials to our entire team. Here’s how…
