101 Free HTML Email Marketing Templates courtesy of MailChimp

July 17th, 2009 | by Ben

thm-101-free-html-email-templatesMailChimp has some built-in HTML email templates with cool automagic powers, but for people who are “photoshop challenged” our templates can be a little hard to understand.

So we asked the guys at TemplateZone to build a version of their HTML email template tool specifically for MailChimp (and to make it free). Since it’s desktop software, it can do a lot of cool stuff that you’d normally have to do yourself (or hire a designer). The software is free (because we love you), and includes 101 HTML email templates for different occasions.

Here’s how it works.

You can download the application here. It’s about 100 Megs (think of it as a word processor, template designer, and graphics app all in one), and it’s Windows only. Mac users, you won’t see a download link there. We’ve got something similar coming for you real soon, plus you can always use Apple Mail’s awesome templates w/MailChimp using our Email Beamer feature (not to be confused with this beamer).

Anyway, once you’ve got the software downloaded, this is roughly how it works.

First, you’ll open it up and pick a template:

select-template

There are a bunch of different categories to choose from. I picked this “free shipping” template:

edit-text-inside-images

As you can see, the diagonal text in the graphic is editable. Just double click on it and change it to whatever you want.

The rest of the application is pretty self-explanatory. There’s a big text block where you can add all your text. The interface is very similar to any other WYSIWYG-enabled application, so you can insert graphics and stuff (images will be hosted free on MailChimp’s servers).

Another nice touch is that some of the templates have a top navigation bar, which is easily tweakable too:

navigation-bars

After your email is designed, you just enter a subject line, and click the “Send to MailChimp” button. You’ll be asked to select the list:

Then the email design will be sent to MailChimp and stored as a draft.

When you log in to MailChimp, you’ll find the email waiting for you on the Campaigns Dashboard.

Click the “preview” button to check the design:

If all is ok, click send. If you want to tweak it more, go back to the desktop app, make changes, and re-submit to MailChimp.

So there you have it. Yet another easy way to send awesome emails with MailChimp!

Many thanks to the guys at TemplateZone for making this available to MailChimp users free of charge.

The Monkey blows me away. I have used email services for years and have never seen anything like this. I paid for email templates in the past. Now I can do them myself.
New customer with the monkey.. and I love it.

Thanks for thinking of us MacFolks!

      Eventually… :)

      • Ben says:

Heh, the majority of our product team are MacFolk too, so the Mac version of this was actually where we started. Just so happened the PC version got done faster. Stay tuned!

I’ve always been told it’s better to have a designer hard-code html templates, because the wsiwyg editors often add additional code and/or use CSS and other features that are stripped out by many email clients. How does the TemplateZone editor compare in this area?

      • Ben says:

Hard-coded HTML emails are always the safest route (so long as the designer understands the art of HTML email design) because WYSIWYGs do indeed tend to screw things up. But as far as WYSIWYG-created templates go, these are pretty good. As always, you should test your campaigns with our inbox inspector, and consult your physician before any heavy activity.

By the way – really, really nice signup form you have here: http://eepurl.com/cdxr

Thanks! Short and sweet hopefully means higher conversions. Now if I could only make the zip code required without requiring the entire address to be filled out…:)

I’m a relatively new convert from Vertical Response, have to agree with Rabbit above–the Monkey rocks.

      Hi there,

I can’t actually set up this program because it tells me my login details are not accepted (even though I checked three times that I was entering the correct info, and logged into MailChimp at the same time). Would love to use this…if only it would let me! :(

I am having the same problem and MailChimp can’t figure out why. They told me to contact TempalteZone in the meantime. Hopefully someone on here can help us!

Great tool, for a non techy its gonna take some practice but amazed at what can be done already – great job!

      Jezzat

ps How do you get the emails into autoresponder campaigns?

    • Jeremy says:

Hey Ben – you guys have such a great system – i think I have worked out the auto responder bit since sending the last comment!

I’m a little apprehensive about HIE5, as I was a user of HIE4, and switched to the Chimp because it was just too buggy. It had some great qualities, but was too much of a chore to run. Here’s hoping they really stepped it up a bit. :/

I am a Mac user, but would like to download the Template tool for PC to have a look.
The link refering to the tool http://www.mailchimp.com/resources/html_email_templates/
      is a file of just 49kb ?

      A small tip.
Macusers should have a look at http://www.equinux.com They have Stationary Pack for Apple Mail until we get the Mactool for Mailchimp

      Hi Ben,

This sounds like a great addition to MailChimp. Unfortunately, I am experiencing similar problems to Jennifer, who raised an issue above. During the installation process, the wizard deems my MailChimp login credentials to be incorrect, when they are definitely being supplied correctly. Any ideas why this may be the case?

      All the best,

      Joe

      Hey Everyone …..

I was having the same install problem, and after about 8 attempts I finally tried this ….. and got it to install!

      - If your anti-virus firewall keeps poping up, simply (TEMP) disable it. Worked like a charm and was able to finish the install with no problem =)

Don’t forget to re-enable your firewall settings after you finish!

I must’ve done something wrong because I was looking for free holiday themed templates and there are only three included in High Impact Email 5. The want me to pay $49.95 for the holiday pack. I thought they were FREE.

      • Ben says:

Amanda, we haven’t had time to post any details, sorry. You actually have to download their holiday pack, which is something like 360+ new templates (free). It’s a BIG download at 247MB. Download here

I’ve been trying to install this for a few days now, everything seems to install fine, until I try to run the programme, and then I get a message saying that the programme has encountered an error and needs to close. Any ideas?
